Quick Reference - Which Hook For What

🪝 Simple / J-Hook MOST COMMON

The workhorse hook - standard J-shape, straight shank, single point. Used for the vast majority of natural bait fishing in FP.

When to use

• Bottom rigs with cutbait, dead fish, worms, minnows
• Float rigs with live bait, corn, dough balls, semolina
• Feeder rigs paired with groundbait + bait
• Any situation where the fish sees the bait in open water (no weedless needed)

🪝 Offset Hook BASS SPECIALIST

90° bend near the eye lets you bury the hook point back into soft plastic baits - creates a weedless presentation that slides through cover without snagging.

Primary use: Texas Rig for Bass

Bullet Sinker (3/16 - 1/2 Oz) → Texas Rig stopper → Offset Hook (#3/0 - #5/0) → Soft plastic

Best locations

• San Joaquin Delta - Largemouth Bass on worm rigs around tule mats ✓ (you've done this)
• Falcon Lake - Largemouth in weedy structure (Texas rig Senko is meta here)
• Emerald Lake - Smallmouth/Largemouth on weedless jig-worms
• Everglades - Snook and Peacock Bass in mangrove cover
• Neherrin River - Largemouth in cover-rich river bends

When NOT to use offset hooks

• Live bait (minnows, worms direct) - use baitholder/J-hook instead
• Crankbaits / spoons / spinners - hooks come pre-rigged (treble)
• Catfish cutbait - use J-hook #6/0-#8/0
• Panfish - use small J-hook/baitholder #6-#12
• Saint-Croix Lake (your current base) - blue cats and sturgeon don't need weedless

🪝 Carp Hook CARP SPECIALIST

Wide gap, short shank, designed for hair rigs with boilies, corn, and dough baits. The bait sits off the hook bend (on the "hair"), letting the hook swing freely for solid hooksets.

When to use

• Dedicated carp fishing with boilies, corn, pellets, hair rigs
• Feeder + groundbait setups targeting Common/Mirror/Crucian Carp
• Night carp sessions with alarm bells + PVA bag setups

🪝 Saltwater Hook DLC / SALTWATER

Heavy-gauge hooks designed for the powerful runs and hard mouths of saltwater species. Often corrosion-resistant coatings, stronger wire.

When to use

• Saltwater locations (Florida Keys, Everglades saltwater zones, Congo Delta saltwater)
• Heavy-duty setups for Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Bonefish, Permit
• Shark and Grouper targeting with heavy cutbait/live bait

Generally not needed for your current freshwater rotation. Keep a small supply if you plan to travel to the Keys or saltwater DLC zones.

🪝 Treble Hook ON ALL LURES

Three-point hooks already attached to crankbaits, spoons, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and most active lures. Generally you don't choose these directly - they come with the lure.

When to think about trebles

• Swapping lure hooks for stronger/sharper replacements on aging lures
• Downsizing treble on a lure that's bending out on big fish
• Upsizing treble on a lure that has undersized factory hooks

In FP the lure + treble combo is usually pre-matched to the species - you likely don't need to fiddle with these.
