🪝 Simple / J-Hook MOST COMMON

The workhorse hook - standard J-shape, straight shank, single point. Used for the vast majority of natural bait fishing in FP.

SizeTargetExample Bait
#12 - #8Panfish (bluegill, perch, roach)Maggots, Bloodworms, Red Worms
#6 - #2Mid-size (bream, crappie, catfish small)Night Crawlers, Semolina Balls, Shrimp
#1/0 - #3/0Bass, walleye, pike, small catsMinnows, Shiners, Crayfish
#4/0 - #6/0Cats, sturgeon (medium class)Medium Cutbait, Duck Mussel Meat
#7/0 - #8/0Cats/sturgeon (large)Large Cutbait, Large Minnows
#9/0 - #10/0Monster class (rarely best)Oversized cutbait - often too big for hookup
Your finding (Saint-Croix, 4/8): Medium Cutbait + #6/0 beats Large Cutbait + #10/0 for Blue Catfish hookup rate. #10/0 is often too big - fish can't fully engulf the hook. Stick to #6/0-#8/0 for the cat volume class.

🪝 Offset Hook BASS SPECIALIST

90° bend near the eye lets you bury the hook point back into soft plastic baits - creates a weedless presentation that slides through cover without snagging.

Primary use: Texas Rig for Bass

Bullet Sinker (3/16 - 1/2 Oz) → Texas Rig stopper → Offset Hook (#3/0 - #5/0) → Soft plastic

You've already used this on the WBT BassEnchanter 7'3" at SJD - exact rig type.

When they shine

ScenarioWhy
Bass in heavy cover (weeds, laydowns, submerged logs)Weedless - slides through grass
Worm fishing (Senko, Ribbon, Creature baits)Natural bait profile, hook buried
Flipping/pitching into tight structureWon't hang on branches/rocks

When NOT to use offset hooks

🪝 Carp Hook CARP SPECIALIST

Wide gap, short shank, designed for hair rigs with boilies, corn, and dough baits. The bait sits off the hook bend (on the "hair"), letting the hook swing freely for solid hooksets.

When to use

#2 - #1Common Carp (standard)Boilies, corn strings, pellets

Your Mega Chuber 12'4" SE setup at SJD uses this approach - Carp Sinker 4 1/16 Oz + Carp Leader 25 Lb + Hook #1/0 + Banana Sinking Boilies = textbook carp specialist rig.

🪝 Saltwater Hook DLC / SALTWATER

Heavy-gauge hooks designed for the powerful runs and hard mouths of saltwater species. Often corrosion-resistant coatings, stronger wire.

When to use

Generally not needed for your current freshwater rotation. Keep a small supply if you plan to travel to the Keys or saltwater DLC zones.

🪝 Treble Hook ON ALL LURES

Three-point hooks already attached to crankbaits, spoons, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and most active lures. Generally you don't choose these directly - they come with the lure.

When to think about trebles

In FP the lure + treble combo is usually pre-matched to the species - you likely don't need to fiddle with these.
